Coastal Biogeochemistry and Microbial Ecology

The common thread across my research interests is to look at the micro-scale to understand our precious coastal ecosystems.

Blue carbon, and more broadly wetland carbon, is how I spend most of my time these days, looking at the connection between carbon chemistry and the microbes that can break them down.

Seagrass wasting disease is how I started in science, and investigating how the opportunistic pathogen works is an ongoing research passion.

There is more to microbiomes than disease and decay. I am also interested in the microbes and their function that are necessary to healthy plants and ecosystems.

What factors influence the breakdown of plant litter and soil carbon, including the microorganisms responsible for consuming that carbon?

Plant Litter Decomposition

Within my ARC DECRA, I lead the TeaComposition H2O initiative that investigates the conditions and microorganisms that drive litter decomposition, all using standardised tea litter bags. We are in the final year of the program, 

I also test the links between soil microbes, carbon chemistry and greenhouse gas flux under difference climate and environmental pressures.
